At Herkimer College, campus safety and security is our very top priority. Between our outstanding Campus Safety Office staff and other emergency services like the NY Alert System, students and parents can relax knowing we’ve implemented a wide array of safety mechanisms. From our campus siren to our blue light emergency phones to our nighttime auxiliary program, we’re constantly improving our security systems. The Campus Safety Office can be reached by calling 315-574-4020 for non-emergencies. Campus Safety works 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, and 356 days a year. The main Campus safety office is located in the Classroom Administration building room, 138. This office is not manned at all times and it may be necessary to call prior to going to this office. The Director of Campus Safety is located in CA263 in the Dean of Students office suite and can be reached by calling 315-574-4009 Monday through Friday. The Assistant Director works evenings and provides night supervision for the department. The Assistant Director can be reached by calling 315-866-0300 ext. 8499. Officers are dispatched 24 hours per day through the Herkimer County 911 Center. For emergencies call 911 or non-emergencies 315-574-4020. Campus Safety Peace Officers will provide the appropriate assistance and will as assist you with reporting crimes to other area agencies out of our jurisdiction. The Campus Safety Department maintains a memorandum of understanding with the Herkimer Police Department for assistant with violent felony cases as well as other crimes as needed.
It is also possible to confidentially report a crime.
If you have been the victim of sexual assault, you may report the incident to Campus Safety or to one of the College Counselors. The College Counselors can be reached at 315-574-4034, or in the McLaughlin College Center, room 302. Your well-being is their primary concern. They will treat you with respect, sensitivity and will keep your concerns in strict confidence.
The Counseling staff at Herkimer College is committed to assisting students with their adjustments to college life. Trained counselors are available for confidential individual screening appointments with all students. We encourage you to become familiar with their service and visit anytime you need someone to talk to.
Blue Light Emergency Phones
Outdoor emergency phones are located in various locations on campus. They are marked by BLUE LIGHTS above the phone. Pushing the emergency button inside the emergency telephone box immediately connects you to 911.
Herkimer College Student Nighttime Auxiliary Program
Herkimer College Student Nighttime Auxiliary Patrol (SNAP) is designed to provide additional eyes and ears for the Campus Safety Department, as well as provide safe escorts to students, faculty and staff walking about the main campus after dark. College work-study and criminal justice students are available to provide students, faculty, staff and community members with a walking escort on-campus. The service is available from 5:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M., Monday through Thursday. SNAP members also observe and report incidents that may require attention of an officer via portable radio directly. They do NOT initiate any type of security/safety actions aside from their observations/reports. Members of the campus community are encouraged to use SNAP during operational hours.
