What to Bring
Photocopies of all your travel documents, such as your passport, travel forms, birth certificate, and any other documentation relating to immigration (eg, your I-20). Keep your originals with you on the plane. Do not pack them in your luggage.
A copy of your travel itinerary, including flight numbers. If you have a long layover, reading materials will help pass the time.
If you are on any medication, find out if it can be purchased in the U.S. If your medication is not available check with your local doctor to see if you can bring a supply with you to cover your stay in the United States until you go home between semester and summer breaks.
If you have allergies or diabetes, adrenaline (ie, EPI-Pen) and insulin kits are critical. You will want to bring several with you for the semester.
Your eyeglass or contact lens prescription from your physician in case you need replacements while here.
Documentation of any disabilities that you would like to receive services or accommodations for during your time at Herkimer College.
Check to see if your cellular telephone provider has service in the United States. If not, you may want to get a local provider once you are at Herkimer. Also consider using Skype, WeChat, Viber, WhatsApp, or another free international web-based service instead of purchasing a U.S. phone service.
Check that your electrical items voltage is compatible with the U.S. voltage system (110-120V). If not, bring adaptor plugs as the outlet configuration may be different.
If you have a bank account at home, obtain a credit card that will work in the United States. You will be able to open a bank account when you arrive, but you should determine if it would be better to change money into U.S. dollars before you leave or if it would be better wiring money into your new U.S. account.
Driving in the U.S.? Check license restrictions and find out if you need to obtain an International Driving Permit or something else specific to your home country.
A dictionary that contains English and your home language. This will come in handy as you travel and when you get here.
