Jeanne Galvin

For her pioneering leadership, her belief in the competitive spirit and talent of young women, her commitment to developing opportunities for female student-athletes, and her lasting and significant contributions to the growth and success of athletic programming at Herkimer County Community College. Jeanne Galvin was the first female faculty member in the College’s Physical Education Department. Hired in 1971, the history of women’s athletics at the College began with her. Ms. Galvin developed new competitive league structures and post-season scholastic competitions for women in New York State’s Section III. She wrote the rules of competition for two-year women’s collegiate athletics and garnered acceptance of junior college women’s sports by the New York State Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. Ms. Galvin organized field hockey, volleyball, women’s basketball, and softball teams at the College, and coached them all. She led the field hockey team to national championship titles in both 1987 (the College’s first national title) and 1991.
